God alone has Immortality

God alone has Immortality

In looking at the subject of immortality, let's start at the beginning. That beginning is with God.

God's Word declares that only God has immortality.

1 Timothy 6:16
God alone has immortality. He dwells in light which no-one can approach -- no-one has seen Him -- no-one can see Him. Honour and power are His forever and ever.

God alone is immortal. He is without beginning and without end.

Like Father, like Son

This is true of the Father. It is likewise true of the Son. Jesus shares with His Father the attribute of immortality.

Note Jesus' words in Revelation chapter one.

Revelation 1:17-18
17 ... I am the first and the last:
18 I am he that did live, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore...

Jesus is the first. No-one existed before Him.
He is also the last. Bearing in mind that He will never cease to exist, no-one can possibly out-live Him.
Jesus is both the first and the last. These attributes can belong only to God. Compare Jesus' words with Isaiah 44:6.

Isaiah 44:6
This is what the Lord, the King of Israel, the Redeemer, the Lord of hosts says; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

Without question, God is the first and the last. There's absolutely no other God.
Jesus knew the implication of his words when he stated, "I am the first and the last." He clearly said these words in reference to himself. His words carry a clear reference to Isaiah 44:6. Jesus absolutely affirms his identity. He claims to be the one spoken about in Isaiah.
Being God, he is immortal. Becoming a man, Jesus is subject to death just like all of us. As a man he died for mankind's sins, he rose from death, he is alive for evermore.
